In 2008, the nonprofit enlisted GlobalHealth Lab’s help in becoming more financially sustainable and exploring its potential to scale up. An MIT student team evaluated the nonprofit’s activities, assessed opportunities to expand their programs, and identified current funding challenges along with methods for the organization to present itself more attractively. The students presented step-by-step recommendations for increasing SIC’s market share, shoring up its ability to generate income, and developing its fundraising capabilities. SIC used these recommendations to inform their marketing materials, build up a bigger fee-based volunteer program, and grow the workplace training program.
