In 2008, recognizing that high transportation costs remained a major barrier for patients requiring chronic care, SHIP approached GlobalHealth Lab for help in developing broader and more financially sustainable income-generating programs. An MIT student team researched microfinance models, conducted multiple field visits, and collaborated with a diverse set of stakeholders and entrepreneurs to devise a plan that could enable beneficiaries to develop high-margin crops and raise chickens. The team also produced a guide to the administration of SIC income-generating opportunities.
At the project’s end, SHIP and the MIT students successfully presented their recommendations to donors, enabling the Mbarara partnership to develop as proposed.
