Discovering Multiple Opportunities to Revamp a Rural Clinic

ELI-K Chebaiywa Dispensary was a small, mission-based rural health clinic in western Kenya serving underserved communities.

In 2008, ELI-K sought guidance on becoming financially sustainable. A team of MIT Sloan students identified strategies to increase financial sustainability by analyzing local markets, delving into the nonprofit’s budgets and sources of funding, assessing the clinic’s utilization and geographical reach, and looking into the organization’s current marketing. They identified opportunities to expand services, improve daily operations and extend the reach of marketing efforts to increase revenues while serving patients and the community more effectively.
