Optimizing Materials Distribution to Reach Underserved Youth

loveLife is South Africa’s national HIV prevention initiative for young people ages 12-24. With a network of programs that extended to 900 sites across nine provinces, the nonprofit melded behavior change with clinical services through youth-friendly programs and, in less than a decade, had become an essential part of South African life.

In 2011, the non-profit organization asked GlobalHealth Lab to address two distinct opportunities: first, making its distribution channels more efficient and, second, leveraging its expertise to have broader impact. One team of MIT students performed an external assessment of the distribution system through observations, review of current practices, and research into other extensive distribution channels, and then presented recommendations to increase operational efficiency and cost effectiveness.
