Harnessing data to grow a hospital’s reach and sustainability. The largest partner hospital of the major US-based charity Smile Train, G. S. Memorial performed over 23,000 cleft surgeries between 2004 and 2012, more than any other cleft center in the world. In 2013, the hospital’s head asked GlobalHealth Lab to explore ways to build on the hospital’s clinical capabilities and to expand treatment for cleft lip and burn victims.

The project evolved into a broader focus on organizational and mission sustainability, for which the student team collected data across major categories including organization, finance, marketing, and patient recruiting. The students’ report documented detailed findings, insights, and recommendations for optimizing the use of screening camps, QuRX software development, and strategic accounting design.
