Groundwork Toolkit: Developing criteria for patient admittance and discharge

A criteria development framework for healthcare providers
An MIT student team shares their method after working with a hospice in Kenya

Following the completion of their Global Health Delivery Lab (ghdLAB) projects in Africa and India, we asked our MIT student teams to reflect on their ghdLAB project experience and share what they learned – insights, a how-to guide, best practice tips  – in ways that can be used by others undertaking similar work or facing similar issues in global health. We share their thoughts under the ‘management for the world’ (mftw) collection in the hopes that others will build on it in keeping with the creative commons license.

The following framework is a method that can be utilized by healthcare providers for patient admittance and discharge.  This is a tool that can help health care providers stay focused on its mission and refrain from spending inefficient time determining whether a patient should be admitted into the clinic or discharged from the clinic. By using this framework, medical staff can easily and quickly determine the status for admittance or discharge for any patient.

This is a framework that can be used by any clinic to develop an easy flowchart that they can use internally, as well as with external partners, to clearly communicate the patient admittance and discharge criteria. This presentation shows the development and implementation steps that should be completed for an effective framework.  Then we show an example of a flowchart for a hospice.  This example flow chart details the process for determining whether a patient is eligible for care from the hospice, if so whether it is in-patient or out-patient care, and finally when the patients move on from any one of these categories.
